The Port Royal Road in Kingston, Jamaica was closed until the wee hours of this morning to facilitate removal of another section of the American Airlines aircraft, which overshot the runway at the Norman Manley International Airport on December 22.

A crane was deployed to carry out the removal exercise at the site, which is located across from the runway at the airport, and this has necessitated the closure of the road.

The tail section of the crashed plane was removed in an operation which on December 26th at 10:45 p.m.

The aircraft, carrying 148 persons, plus a crew of six, from Miami, ended up on the beach across the road from the airport. There were no fatalities.

Director of Flight Safety at the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Nari Williams-Singh, and a team from the Authority are leading the investigations into the incident, assisted by a six-member team from the United States (US) National Transportation Safety Board.

Seven representatives from American Airlines have also arrived in the island from Puerto Rico, to assist with dismantling of the aircraft.
